An Introduction to Len Laim

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my website. I happy to have this opportunity to tell you about my life in Cambodia, my thoughts, and my future plans. I hope you will enjoy the stories I have to share with you today, and we can become good friends for life.

In this world there is nothing more valuable than life itself. Humans, the birds, fishes, and all the animals want nothing more than to live in safety. For us, it is more difficult to watch another human be sick or die, than a bird, fish, or any animal. Human life has a value beyond all else. We are all born in this world, and will eventually grow old, become sick, and die. I feel it is very important that during the time that we are alive, that we are strong, and full of good health. Whether we are rich or poor, we will all become sick in some way at some time, but much of the sickness in the world can be prevented or cured. In our world today, and especially in Cambodia, we need many kinds of doctors.

Cambodia is a very poor, undeveloped country. Not very long ago, we had terrible wars, famine, and genocide. Although the world has many doctors, there are not enough for all the people in the world, and this is especially true in poor, developing countries. Poor people are often uneducated, and know little about how to keep themselves healthy. They do not yet fully understand how pollution can make them sick, or why cleanliness and proper hygiene is important. When they become ill, they believe it is best to pray, and then to go see the traditional healer in their village. Pray and traditional healing methods have their place, but they do not replace the need for trained medical doctors and a well equiped clinic or hospital. Our Cambodian people simply do not know these things yet. Because of all the war and troubles of the past, they have had all they can do to just survive.

Even when our people know enough to visit a trained doctor, or to visit the clinic or the hospital, often they cannot. It is very difficult for our people to travel far from their homes. They have no transportation, and they barely have enough money to eat. Because of this, babies will die before they are one year old, young mothers will become sick and die, and our elderly parents will often die before their time. If we love ourselves, our family, children, friends, relatives, and all the people of the world, then we should do something for those who are struggling so hard to survive. It is necessary for us that we be concerned about all the people in the world, and not only for ourselves, or for those who are near to us. We should want to see all people everywhere survive to live happy, healthy lives.

From my own research and studies about Cambodian society, I have determined that more important than anything else, we have a great need for well trained medical doctors. Therefore, I have put it into my mind and am determined beyond all else to become a trained medical doctor for my people. I understand that this is a very big goal which will require long term dedication and much money. I will need to make many sacrifices while studying difficult subjects for many years. My family supports my goal, but they cannot help me. They are a simple, poor Cambodian farming family, and have nothing more than what is needed to farm and live day to day. Regardless that we have no money, I have hope and am determined to study at the health care university in Phnom Penh, and to graduate with honors. I love my family and thank them so much for helping me through to finish high school, but now I am on my own.

I believe in my abilities and my dream for the future. I learned how to make this website so that I could write to you and that you might believe in me too. You see, I cannot attend medical school unless I find outside help. I continue to look and apply for scholarships, both in Cambodia and elsewhere, but have yet to receive anything. I have a strong positive attitude, and am determined to keep trying until I receive the help I need.
